Advice on establishing belly dance personal practice approaches and goals.

First, decide on a goal that is best for you:

A) Recreational belly dancer

Profile:
She is taking belly dance classes for fun and sisterhood.

Recommendation:
Review and practice 20 to 45 minutes 2 days a week in addition to taking a weekly class. Should invest in simple practice costumes, perhaps a weight belt and enjoy yourself. An instructional video will help you with practice at home and will boost self confidence.

B) Serious Hobbyist Belly Dancer;

Profile:
She is using bellydancing for an athletic fitness regime as well as creativity and challenge. She may be interested in doing light performance and perhaps teaching the dance eventually.

Recommendation:
Use it as a daily workout. Practice and read lots of books, magazines and research the Internet for information on belly dance. Attend big belly dance festivals, workshops, and shows, and take notes. Watch instructional and performance videos. Buy and make a few professional middle east dance costumes. Read the history of the middle east as well as the modern dance movement.

C) Hot Shot Professional Belly Dancer;

Profile:
She wants belly dance offered in universities and added to the list of competitive Olympic games!

Recommendation:
Take a couple of classes or workshops per week if available. Practice 2 hours a day and watch lots of videos and live performances. Learn to play the drum and finger cymbals. Invest in all kinds of CDs and listen to the music as much as you can. Enter contests so it puts the pressure of concentration on your dance. Lift weights, take up yoga, swimming or aerobics. Develop personal goals and take private classes aimed at achieving them. Start collecting costumes, artifacts and props. Read and research all subjects closely as well as vaguely related.

D) Auxiliary Belly Dancer;

Profile:
Loves to wear the costumes, dabble and be supportive. May have physical limitations due to age, illness or a handicap but loves belly dance!

Recommendation:
Yes, you too can participate. Other women need your energy and support even if you are not very mobile at the moment. Belly dance is a state of mind, too!
